In Sunlight

(26 February 1989) after William Shakespeare

Sunlight lies like an openness in trees as we drive along Skyline Boulevard and remember, when we turned to the west, the reservoir silver against the light. As we turn a corner, foothills fall to the sea, which you say you can see in the brightness. Another corner and over valleys, freeways, cities, and the bay to the east, the brown angel of oppression.
