Contests

We would put on our finest hats and turn out our parkas to show their feathers. People from a village on a nearby island would come to dance, sing, and join in contests. We offered our best food and drink, and were ready to put up everyone for the night. Drummers beat their drums, large and small, and a guest would stand up to sing. Relations between villages were always tested so a song would become a personal challenge. The man who was challenged would stand and sing his answer. Everyone would laugh.
