It Takes Friends to Make Friends

for Alan Acacia

He would improve some things in himself if he could, for example, his short-term memory, but his ability to see and understand his own emotions was not one of these. He was irritated with his girlfriend; every time the phone rang it was another man and she was on it for an hour whether in the middle of the night or the middle of dinner. It plainly bothered him until he reminded himself that if it weren’t for these others she wouldn’t realize grounds for trust in him. Now what about his capacity for self-deception?
