An arthropod egg hatches as a larva, a nymph, or a diminutive version of its parents. When it outgrows its exoskeleton, it must molt. It sheds its old one and excretes a new one. A diminutive offspring may add segments and appendages as it grows. A nymph must add wings. A larva must metamorphose.
