Puffin-skin parka

Half the skins stained red ochre; the rest left a complementary tan. Only red for the chest, outlined with ribbons of small tan rectangles outlined in red. Three vertical bands of braided tan ribbons crossed with brown. The rest alternating red, tan, and double lines of red on tan, in a symmetrical array and finished with a brown hem and dozens of brown six-inch tassels hanging below the shoulders and onto the lap, cleaned cured, dyed, sewn, hours and hours of work by hand, made bird skins into something light, warm, waterproof, and beautiful.
