Viking longboats were clinkers; their planks were overlapped bow to stern, strengthening the boat and allowing a lighter frame, but limiting the boat’s size. The boats of Columbus were carvels; their planks were mounted edge to edge on a heavier frame, which scaled up to larger boats and ships.
