In 1951, Ambrose Weeres, a farmer living on a Horseshoe lakes near Richmond, Minnesota, welded together two rows of barrels and put a cruiser platform on them. Essentially a catamaran, but useful for only calm waters, pontoon boats, including smaller inflatable versions, serve fishermen and vacationers who want to get out on the water.
