She loved little animals

Hilda imagined seeing things from their little eyes. She thought they’d be a little thirsty and hungry, living in the walls of her stone house on St Kilda in the village of Hirta, so after her husband went to sleep, she put out water and a small handful of oats and was thankful in the morning when the oats disappeared. She could see that grasses from around the house were bitten off near the ground and she imagined their tiny warm nests among the stones. In the evening, she sang pretty little songs to them, and her husband thought she was singing for him.
