Donkor assumed that the gods were what they said they were, basically manifestations of natural and human forces, so why should priests be needed to dress and feed them? Gods take care of themselves. They move the sun and moon, they oversee heaven and earth, they bring sunshine and floods, they created all living things but why did they create priests? Donkor didn’t see a need for priests except to deceive people and grab riches for themselves, but he knew he couldn’t speak his mind because priests had spies everywhere and they had the ear of the pharaoh.
