Beauty (literal translation of Du Fu’s poem)

There is a beauty in the world, living in a secluded valley. She claims to be a good girl, but she lives alone among the grass and trees. Guanzhong was in chaos, and brothers were killed. It doesn’t matter if you are a high-ranking official, you can’t take in your own flesh and blood. The world hates decline and everything changes with the passing of time. The husband is frivolous, and the new wife is as beautiful as jade. The couple knows when to get married, and the mandarin ducks don’t sleep alone. I only see the new wife laughing, and I don’t hear the old one crying. The spring water in the mountains is clear, and the spring water out of the mountains is turbid. The maid came back from selling pearls, and she tied vines to mend the thatched cottage. Picking flowers does not put in hair, picking cypress leaves fills the hands. The weather is cold, the green sleeves are thin, and the sun is setting and leaning against the bamboo.
