Wang Zhaojun grew up in Baoping, a small village. By the time she left the purple palace, no one could watch a sunset, rest eyes on a desert in the moonlight, or smell a fresh spring breeze without remembering her. She sang songs in her native Hu; in each of them—a thousand years of sadness.
