Wealth and Status — Yurok

If someone dies from another’s negligence, the negligent one is obligated to pay. Payment for this wrong could be money or servitude; either establishes the value of this life. Money doesn’t buy food, clothing, or shelter; the basic necessities are not for sale. Wealth is something to be gained if others do your family wrong. Wealth is something to be lost if your family doesn’t do everything right. Wealth is status and status is virtue. That is why good people don’t have to worry.
