Garden — Yurok

All the land from seashore to mountaintop was our home and our garden. If any plant could serve no purpose then we took care to burn it back. We protected the sugarpine because its sugar was an antidote for eating poisoned mussels. We protected hazel bushes because they provided basketry and their nuts made milk and flour. We protected the oak trees and carefully allocated them so that no family would go hungry. If anyone scorned these protections, then he would be rooted out like a weed.
