Feast Oration — Wintu

All our people gather from all the villages for spring and harvest feasts. Even if they bring jealousies or grudges against each other, they all gather to feast and dance. The ceremonial master comes from the assembly house and stands before the sacred pole. He urges everyone to eat, young and old, girls and boys; he calls for dancers to dance. He tells everyone to accept the food, to be agreeable to each other, and to address each other as “brother” and “sister,” “aunt” and “uncle,” “niece” and “nephew.”
