Character — Hupa

Your family tries to teach you and wants you to behave, but they love you and they accept you no matter what so you may behave as you will. Character is hard to explain, why the brother of a good man goes crazy and beats his wife, why the son of a generous man is stingy, why some men are cowards and others are always fighting. The head of a village is like a parent with children. He must exhort and harangue, because people will be people. It’s OK to act different. Some people can’t help it. But if you try to harm others or yourself, the head of the village will talk to you, and maybe ask a doctor to see if he can help. If all else fails, there’s always getting what you’ve been asking for.
