Generosity and Greed — Karuk

Water-ouzel used to be a man but he was greedy. Now he hops along the banks where he used to fish and eats mud. Pine tree used to be his wife; Bear-lily and Hazel bush were his children. But they took after their mother, not him. When they were hungry he went fishing and when he caught a salmon he ate all himself all but the tail. It was right his wife should leave him, right she should take her children with her. They are more lovely and generous to us than he ever was to them.
