Dick had escaped his past

Dick was a stranger in town. It was the county seat, so many people stayed for a time and then moved on, but Dick neither moved on nor told anyone why he stayed. He said he had been a salesman and had sold factory equipment, but nobody was sure that was a thing. It was clear he didn’t work, and he wasn’t a joiner, and he didn’t talk much. He might have been
in the witness protection program. Maybe he didn’t realize that the things people imagined were much worse than the truth.
