Beach

The beach is empty after midnight, in a sense. Otherwise, the beach is never empty, not where the waves lap upon the sand, not where the lights of the city fade in shadows, not where fish and clams meet nightbird, coyote. The waves call out “Entropy, Entropy,” but where saltwater grinds the continent into sand beachgrass grows around a nest of plover.
