George T. Sharp was known as the “Bear Hunter” and a pioneer of Ellettsville, Indiana.
We find his biography in wikitree, edited by Langley Howse.
“His family had first gone to Kentucky, where George, with Stephens Collins, owned land on Stoner Creek in Clark, Kentucky in 1787.”
George’s wife Sarah (Sally) Johnson “was born 20 May 1783 in Culpepper County, Virginia,
and died in Ellettsville on 27 December 1861 at age 77.
“In 1799 George is mentioned as a ‘tobacco inspector of Bush’s warehouse,’
along with thee other men, on Boone and Four-Mile Creeks in Clark County.
In 1799 George was added as a magistrate to the court (Grand Jury).
‘He dropped off the court after a year for reasons never stated.’”
“George and other heads of families erected crude log cabins
on their respective land late in the fall of 1816.
They lived there during the winter, clearing land for the 1817 crop.
Early in 1817 their families joined them. George is written up as being
an expert bear killer and he kept the settlers in meat the first winter.
During his surveying expeditions of the south he averaged a bear a day.
George asked the court to build a grist mill on his and Adam Sharp’s land
on Hardwick Creek in July of 1800.
This is one of the earlier-mentioned events in what would become Powell County, Kentucky.”
“George died in June of 1830 in Ellettsville, Indiana.
Both he and his wife are buried in a Presbyterian cemetery donated from part of their farm.
(Presbyterian Cemetery, Ellettsville, Monroe, Indiana).”
