A long history informs the meanings of both pentagram and cross. These were scratched into prison-cell walls in the thirteenth century, and their meanings remain the same today, at least among well-educated westerners. Appeals to hidden powers for protection and for punishment of oppressors takes many forms and will continue until injustice is abolished from history, doubtless in the very distant future.
