I copy the words “It’s after nine but I’ll go down and set up some bread and coffee for you” and feel guilty to steal these from the voice and gesture of this small strong old caretaker who has in her absolutely no nonsense. It is her way to do no favor but to put herself out rather than that anyone should find reason to criticize her.
