Published and Unpublished Letters

I wrote “Objectivists” 1927-1934 between 1975 and 1982. Since those years, previously unpublished letters have been published. Compared to the original edition of this work, copyrighted in 1983, this online edition adds citations, in the endnotes and in the bibliography, to the books that have published the letters to date. This document summarizes and references uses of the unpublished letters, and notes if and where they are now published.

I have ordered these lists by the order of their first citations. For each item, the leading numbers give the section and endnote, separated by a period. These are linked to the endnote itself. The date is linked to the location in the text of the first reference or quotation. The texts and endnotes are also cross-linked; you can click on the superscripted note numbers to jump back and forth.

Williams to Zukofsky

All letters that I referenced and that were previously unpublished are included in The Correspondence of William Carlos Williams and Louis Zukofsky. Ed. Barry Ahearn. Middletown, CT: Wesleyan University Press, 2003, cited below as Correspondence.

Zukofsky to Pound

I did not get permission from Paul Zukofsky to quote unpublished letters by Zukofsky, so all letters cited are paraphrased.

Published letters are found in Pound/Zukofsky: Selected Letters of Ezra Pound and Louis Zukofsky, and in The Selected Letters of Louis Zukofsky on z-site.net.
