Clockmakers made clocks that didn’t need to be wound. They operated on changes of temperature or barometric pressure. The clocks created the illusion of perpetual motion, but a true perpetual motion machine would produce work without the input of energy. The universe might seem to be a perpetual motion machine. Eventually, however, like clocks, it will lose energy, wear out, and run down.
