Unsinkable Sam

The sinking of the German battleship Bismarck started the apocryphal career of a black and white cat named Oskar, later called Unsinkable Sam, as the cat, they say, was found floating on a board, rescued, and brought aboard the HMS Cossack, which the Germans destroyed by torpedo five months later. Sam was transferred to the HMS Ark Royal, an aircraft carrier, and this ship, too, was sunk by a torpedo, although Sam and all but one of the crew were rescued. Sam lived out his storied life in peace at a home for sailors in Belfast.
