Before the world had been drained of its magic, it wasn’t all fun and games. In the original story, there were two jinn, the jinnī of the magic lamp, and the lesser jinnī of the magic ring, who could be put to cross purposes. The holder of each was its master, to bid his genie to any act, good or evil, so between the sorcerer and Aladdin, wits and not virtue determined the story. Today the place for magic is all eaten up by science.
