Snails

Caṇḍa Ānanda said, “Let’s say snails are sentient, they have feelings. We know they have a desire to live. Why else would they crawl from the bushes to eat my bean spouts in the middle of the night? I wait for the moonlight and go out in the field and squash them with a stick. This is why a farmer shouldn’t try to be a Buddhist.”
