To a child, things are less predictable than for an adult who has everything figured out. A child might not distinguish happenstance from a deliberate event. If an event threatens to be unpleasant but the child crosses her fingers and then it turns out to be fine, this seems like agency, not pure chance, and we want the child to feel safe and be confident, don’t we?
