John Wesley taught that faith should be upheld by reason, not by enthusiasm, which so easily deceives. Can we trust in anything else, such as love, which is so often less than true? We have no choice, it seems, as any truth is mediated by personal experience. Whether insecure or overconfident, it’s hard to say whether we interpret anything in the light or only by the shape of its shadow. To reject a shadow might mean only that you can’t distinguish it from the light.
