Regina’s the only one who isn’t dissembling. Her husband, Charles Lampert, had kept the source of his money secret. Brian, a U.S. Treasury agent, pretends to be Peter Joshua, on holiday. Carson Dyle pretends to be Hamilton Bartholomew, a CIA administrator. Brian says he’s Alexander, Carson Dyle’s brother. Brian says he’s Adam Canfield, a professional thief. Even the fortune, left by Charles, is in disguise.
This romantic screwball comedy mystery checks all the boxes. It even has a famous jazz composition for its theme song.
Typically, Hollywood paired up leading men with women who were thirty years younger. Cary Grant objected to the original script in which he, as Brian, pursued Regina. He was more comfortable with her pursuing him.
Henry Mancini wrote the theme song and Johnny Mercer wrote its lyrics. Cary Grant stars as Brian Cruikshank (aliases Peter Joshua, Alexander Dyle, Adam Canfield), Audrey Hepburn as Regina "Reggie" Lampert, Walter Matthau as Carson Dyle (alias Hamilton Bartholomew), James Coburn as Tex Panthollow, George Kennedy as Herman Scobie. Peter Stone and Marc Behm wrote the story.
