One reason crime exists is the stupidity of the perpetrators and the fact that the perfect crime doesn’t exist. The need for improvisation arises but the capacity of criminals will never rise to meet it.
After Mrs. Wilberforce discovers their deception she insists on reporting them, so they try to kill her, but this doesn’t go as well for them, so, one by one, they kill each other or meet unlucky fatal accidents.
The true victimless crime would not be a crime. Nevertheless, with all the perpetrators dead, with the police refusing to relieve her of the plunder, and with the insurance companies already having covered all the losses, Mrs. Wilberforce gets to keep the cash.
