Poor farmers are not trained to stand up for themselves. The cost of resisting seems greater than giving in. For bandits, this is fine; they come after the harvests and take all they want, including young women. They kill anyone who resists, and leave the rest to starve. It’s pretentious to assume to change the order of things, but human beings are known for being surprising.
What you wouldn’t do for money you might do because you’re hungry. You might be too old or too young to work for a wealthy lord. You might make a sacrifice because you know it’s right. You might feel sorry for the farmers; you might like a farmer’s daughter. Maybe your parents were farmers and they had been killed by bandits. Maybe you’ll risk your life for honor, or because a friend asked you to.
