The contractor wouldn’t pay his workers if he could get away with it. The bandits would take anything of value if they could overpower the men on the train. The prospectors would kill an interloper to protect their gold. One partner would kill another as soon as he thinks he can get away with it. It’s more than a lack of trust. It’s more than not respecting the law. In this mythic part of the desert, discovering a bit of empathy makes a happy ending.
Greed is a reasonable response to deprivation and desperation. Letting it lead you to murder and theft, however, might have consequences.
