It took a few centuries for the first human-powered aircraft to succeed with a controlled and sustained flight. The Gossamer Condor, with a wingspan of 96 feet and weighing only 70 pounds, designed by Paul MacCready, piloted and powered by Bryan Allen, flew a mile in a figure-eight in 1977 at Minter Field, Shafter, California.
