It’s a decent job. I just do what I’m told. I don’t handle any cash, just check the levels and give receipts to the truckers.

You gotta be a loner. Nobody else here to talk to, no phone, no TV. I just read a book. Actually a lot of books. I like mysteries, detective stories. Takes you to places where things happen. Nothing happens here. I guess that’s alright, too. No stress. Never met my boss. Been here thirty-two years. If I get sick, I call an automated phone system from home. Press 2 if you can’t work today. They replace me with someone I don’t know.

I never was ambitious. For me, that’s like working without being paid. I’d rather have spare time. Sometimes, when the morning is cool and the day is warm, I call in sick and go fishing. Nobody minds.

What is life for? When I get to the gates of heaven, I want to say I never hurt anybody, never caused any trouble, never complained about anything.

I don’t ask where the gas goes. Nobody stops to buy gas. That’s intentional. The pumps don’t actually work. There are signs on them. Out of order. If somebody stops to buy gas, I just ignore them. I can’t do anything for them. Remember, there’s no phone here.
