People underestimate women over a certain age, especially widows, and they shouldn’t. They only see their own stereotype, and nobody is merely a stereotype.

The history of the Cat Fanciers’ Association of Maryland shows us the value of women over the age of 68. It shouldn’t be surprising at all that those women take home the lion’s share of awards at our annual cat show. Those women have found ways to excel that are surprising, if you know anything about it, and stop think about it.

Everyone deserves to be respected as an individual, not just widows. The same is true of cats. It’s not a new discovery that cats have personalities, so why don’t we regard them as persons? They can be as surprising as a person. Each one is unique, much more surprising than our stereotype of cats.

So, it turns out that you get the best behavior from a cat if you respect her and treat her as an individual, not like an individual. It shouldn’t be surprising. A cat has individual needs, individual abilities, individual preferences. You need to tailor a cat’s training like a human athlete. To do that, you need to learn its language.

Human beings are really so stuck up, generally. It’s like they think they are the only creatures with brains. Not my ladies, but many people do. Just because you don’t know about something doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen.

I’m sorry. You’ve caught me in a mood for scolding. Would you like a cup of hot tea? I’m sure you have questions for me that I haven’t answered yet.
