The first month of the Bengali calendar is the first of two months of summer. Its name is derived from the position of the sun near the star বিশাখা (Bishakha, or Vishākhā) meaning “forked, having many branches.” This month corresponds to Vaiśākha in the Nepali calendar. It’s first day of বৈশাখ is new year’s day. The Bengali calendar has six seasons, summer, the monsoon or wet season, autumn, the dry season, winter, and spring.
