Sixty minutes or one twenty-fourth of the mean solar day, when a day is defined as twenty-four hours. Sunrise, noon, sunset, a day as we experience it, waking, working, sleeping, is approximated and corrected as needed. And why 24? It’s because the Egyptians used base 12 so it was nice to have 12 hours in the night and 12 hours in the day. And why 60? It was the Sumerians.
