Lithuanian calendar

The Lithuanian calendar is the same as the Gregorian calendar except that the Lithuanians give the months and the days their own names. January is sausis, meaning “dry.” Humidity is low because it’s so cold. February is vasaris, meaning “summer.” At least people start to think of warmer days. March is kovas, meaning “rook.” Nesting and mating of rooks increases this month. April is balandis, meaning “dove.” Doves have begun to nest and mate. May is gegužė, meaning “cuckoo.” Its call heralds spring. June is birželis, meaning “birch,” which flowers this month. July is liepa, meaning “linden,” which flowers this month. August is rugpjūtis, meaning “cutting rye.” Rye is harvested this month. September is rugsėjis, meaning “planting,” since grains are planted this month. October is spalis, meaning “flax hards.” Flax is harvested this month. November is lapkritis, meaning “falling leaves.” Leaves fall from trees. December is gruodis, meaning “frozen clods,” the condition of the snow this month.
