“Pentecost” means “fiftieth” because it occurred on the fiftieth day after Passover. It was the festival of Shavuot, the harvest festival and the time to remember God’s covenant with Noah. On the first Christian Pentecost, followers of Jesus felt a baptism by the Holy Spirit as a rush of wind, tongues as of fire, and being able to understand each other no matter what language they spoke. In 2026, Pentecost is Sunday 24 May. Other years it could be in June.
