Commitment If others depend on you and you on others— as in a marriage— or a business— your actions should be in everyone’s best interest, which might be orthogonal to the nature of commitment. Given a commitment, we can hope for the best, but if things don’t turn out you’re committed anyway. On the one hand, we have religious teachings and civil laws to encourage good behavior. On the other hand, we don’t always behave. We tend to stray or even to flout expectations. But leave that aside when love is an influence we can act against our own interests.
