Tribulations

The Babylonians tore down the walls and burned the temple; they dragged wealthy families into the street, slaughtered the children, and gouged out the parents’s eyes. Physically and emotionally devastating horrors are not a kind of entertainment. They are meant to destroy and to subjugate. The question, though, has been settled. The spirit of a people—their culture, their language, their beliefs—can survive.
