Tom loved cats, not just house cats (Felis catus), but wild cats (Felis silvestris), pumas (Felidae), and tigers, lions, jaguars, and leopards (Panthera). For Tom, cats were graceful and powerful, much unlike himself or anyone else he knew. For him, humans (Homo sapiens) were invariably less admirable and lovable, even considering the fact that some of the cats he loved and admired would have eaten him alive.
