I didn’t have any hand in it; I kept my head down. I know the army was offering money for men who would obey orders, but I had plenty of work here with the corn, the cows, the fences and the barn, without shooting or getting shot at. I didn’t want glory; I just wanted a steady job and a warm bed at night.
