Romantic stereotypes of the outlaws and heroes of the West, sensationalized, were exploited to entertain audiences in the East. Enactments and displays thrilled and reassured people. It painted cruelty and hardship with Eastern morality and feelings of superiority. It made them feel safer. Every American male, at heart, thought he could be a cowboy with no restraints except for natural law.
