You can give yourself to another freely only when nobody owns you. The daughter of a rich man? Not really. You can dedicate your life to a poor man only if his poverty never excuses his behavior. If he cares more about his vanity than you, forget it. You can love a banker only if you’re his vault. There’s no trust unless there’s an open door. If it doesn’t last, both are equally to blame. Love a Cossack only if you’re his freedom, if you’re the steppes across which he rides. Freedom to love is freedom to leave.
