Some people couldn’t be tied down. They left their homes and roamed rather than being squeezed and bled dry by the nobility. They grabbed a horse and a sword and put themselves out for hire, to fight Tatars and Turks. They fought bloody rebellions and they survived. Free and proud, they made love in the gardens. We called them free men; others used the Turkic name, козак.
