Jill’s ex lacked all sense of the gift-shop industry. He would scoff when she called it an industry, even though that was what it is. Owning the shop meant she was tied to the place. In the off-season, she couldn’t afford to hire, and in the tourist season, she could never get enough applicants. In the meantime, she had to help her artisans and suppliers anticipate what she knew she would be needing. It was a huge logistics problem, and she was always thinking about it.
