Ecstasy

Religious ecstasy, intense love, some drugs, and self pity all dissolve barriers and the social contract. Thus the homo sapiens devolves to its primal, instinctual state. In this state, anything can be a tool for selfish gratification, and any gratification can be seen as an extension of basic survival. There’s nothing here that Rousseau would recognize. It shouldn’t be considered romantic or compassionate. Even better, everyone has a tiny switch in their brain that was there when they were created that turns this state on either temporarily or permanently. Perversions, obsessions, compulsions, violent hatreds— truly humans are not solely the masters of their own fates.
