Wolves are pack animals, but most wolf packs are families, parent wolves and their offspring. Mated male and female wolves hunt together except when she is nursing their pups. Most kills are made by parents or lone wolves, not by packs of wolves. Our notions of alphas, betas, and a pecking order are romantic fictions.
