From the 1890s, many scientists, working independently,
rediscovered and advanced Gregor Mendel’s work on the laws of inheritance
and began to tease out the mechanisms behind it.
In addition to Theodor Boveri and Walter Sutton,
the scientific historian should study the work of Hugo de Vries, Erich von Tschermak,
Carl Correns, and William Jasper Spillman.
